Community Service
University YMCA
Fall 2013 (Champaign, IL)
As part of my service-learning class (Learning in Community), my class partnered with the local YMCA. Despite its name and proximity, the University YMCA is a community non-profit, and is not affiliated with the University of Illinois. The Y wanted our class' help to improve the sustainability of their building, as well as to increase awareness of sustainable practices in the community. Working closely with the Y staff, the class came up with a number of projects, performed background research, tested, and eventually implemented these projects:

Illinois 4-H
April 2011, 2012, 2013 (Urbana-Champaign, IL)
4-H is a youth organization with the mission of engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development. My primary involvement has been in part of their Science, Engineering, and Technology mandate, specifically annual state robotics competition. Kids in a wide K-12 age range form teams to build robots using LEGO Mindstorms system to meet some stated challenge. Teams are judged on design, programming, teamwork and challenge success. I served as event photographer for the 2011 and 2012 competitions, and as a technical judge of the previously mentioned criteria for the 2013 competition.
